This course is part of a group of courses related to knowledge organization. This course introduces the techniques and systems of the thematic organization of knowledge, that is, the creation of thematic units and correlations that, in turn, allow the user to find what the user is looking for based on the topic of interest. It aims for students to understand the importance and necessity of thematic access to information. This skill is essential for library information scientists due to the massive storm of unorganized or unevaluated information, the accessibility to technical means, and the current conditions of the information society in which we live. The course provides students with the necessary knowledge to access any information based on its subject. In this process, they learn to use controlled or non-controlled vocabularies to seek information and present it according to the rules of the system applied each time.
The applications made during the course allow familiarization with the following: a) the use of controlled vocabularies to create thematic access to information, b) the investigation/expansion of these vocabularies following the standards, c) the creation of controlled vocabularies following standards and techniques, and d) the use of new technologies to ensure access to information without controlled vocabularies.
