Upon completion of the course, students should have acquired:

  • Knowledge of the basic and essential theory of Greek Paleography through the study and understanding of both Greek and foreign language literature. They will also have acquired knowledge of key concepts in the field, such as paleography, codicology, epigraphy, papyrology, diplomatics, and the distinction between manuscripts and documents. In addition to the theoretical approach of the course, students will have acquired at least the basic knowledge necessary to read texts dating from the 8th century to the end of the 19th century.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by archivists and librarians, particularly in terms of the difficulty of reading and interpreting manuscripts and documents. They will also understand the methodology they need to follow to address these challenges, based on the knowledge gained through the course.
  • Through the analysis of data and problems associated with each document from a paleographic perspective, students will have developed the ability to apply their acquired theoretical knowledge to a paleographic approach to manuscripts and archival documents. Their primary goal will be to read these texts, while secondary goals will include the study of both the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of the documents, as well as the context in which they were produced.
  • Evaluation of how the teaching of Greek Paleography becomes one of the most useful tools for scholars working with the classification of historical archival material.
