Upon completion of the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

  • Knowledge of the terminology and key aspects of geographic libraries, geographic information, and geographic collections.
  • Understanding of the social, political, and ethical dimensions involved in the creation and access to geographic information. Additionally, students will develop an awareness of the qualifications and skills required for a Map Librarian/Geographical Information System (GIS) specialist to work in a geographic library, manage a geographic collection, and provide relevant services.
  • Application and Analysis of the key standards for managing geographic information (both printed and digital).
  • Synthesis: Students will acquire the ability to develop a policy document for the development of a geographic collection. They will also gain the capability to select materials for enriching a geographic collection.
  • Evaluation: Students will develop the ability to evaluate the offered geographic resources and services in geographic libraries.
