Indicative Title of Doctoral Dissertation: The contribution of museum libraries to museum operations as shaped by the unified information management environment

Summary

The present research will attempt to study museum libraries. The function and roles of the museum library will be studied in relation to the fulfillment of the mission and the functions of the museum itself. The research will focus on the information environment of the organization and explore how the museum library can become its information center.

The data that will emerge from the theoretical investigation of the operation of museum libraries will be the tools to examine the museum libraries of Greece. More specifically, it will be investigated whether those involved with the museums of Greece -museum employees and visitors- are supported for their information needs by information centers within the museums. The existence of libraries within the museums of Greece will be researched, the information that museum manages holistically, including the information originating from the objects of their collections themselves, the information they provide to the visitors as well as the information needs of the managers (employees) in the museums. The main research question is whether the existence of a museum library as an information center can contribute to all the functions of the museum to effectively fulfill its purpose. The data that will emerge based on the research will compose a model of the operation of a museum library as an information center in a Greek museum.
