It is an introductory course in Archival Science, the discipline concerned with the management of records. Students will gain answers to questions such as: What is a record? How and why is it created? Why do we keep records? What role do they play in daily social activities, both on an individual and collective level? What is their significance for studying the past?

Students will learn about the existence and importance of Archives and they will be introduced to the fundamental methodological principles of archival science and examine the significant changes that modern digital technology has brought to archives and their management.

Upon completing the course, students will:

• Understand the concept and nature of records as well as the significance of archival material for administration and research.

• Be familiar with the types and uses of archival material over time.

• Comprehend the unified nature of archival material (both active and historical records).

• Have knowledge of the basic concepts and principles of archival material management and how to apply them in archival tasks.

• Be able to apply theoretical knowledge to practical examples (hands-on exercises).

• Understand the changes technology has introduced to the field of archives.

• Be capable of evaluating the operation of archival services based on specific criteria.

• Be aware of the primary responsibilities of the General State Archives.
